Cades Cove, Catfish and Italian…Oh, my!

Things To Do, My Tennessee Weekend

Cades Cove, the most visited area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and one of America’s most serene settings, reopens this weekend after five months of closure for road restorations. For the more than nine million annual visitors to the Smoky Mountains, the “Cove” has been missed.

We’ve missed the simplistic beauty of Cades Cove. We’ve missed seeing deer graze in the lush fields, missed seeing the Great Smoky Mountains loom in the background, missed taking a bike ride along the famous 11 mile loop road.

So this news might just make you leap right out of your seat and into your car for a mandatory road trip to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and a trip to Cades Cove.

To celebrate, the park has planned two events April 24-25, including a Field Day on April 24 during which only bicycles and pedestrians will be permitted on the road until noon. On the morning of April 25, the park and the Friends of the Smokies will host a one-time-only “Cades Cove Loop Lope,” which will offer pre-registered runners a choice of the full 11-mile loop or a 3.5-mile loop course. Both events are being planned to minimize visitor inconvenience.

You can also look forward to much more in Tennessee this weekend. In Paris, the World’s Biggest Fish Fry reels you in, including the famous catfish races and activities for the entire family; in Nashville, 35,000 participants set off through downtown during the Country Music Marathon; and Knoxville’s Opera Rossini Festival celebrates opera and Italian culture with food, music and entertainment.

And this just scratches the surface of all that is happening in Tennessee this weekend.  So slather on some sunscreen, grab your friends and hit the road!

See you there!
