Our Tennessee Bear

Things To Do, Nature and Outdoors

In 2006, my husband and I decided to go to Gatlinburg the week of Thanksgiving. We rented a cabin in the mountains just for the first part of the week so we could be home in Middletown, Ohio for the holiday. The cabin we rented had a hot tub on the front porch that overlooked a little pond. The first night there, tired from the drive down, we decided to relax in the hot tub. It was very private. To get to the porch you had to go up about nine steps.

It had began to snow, and the hot tub was feeling really good. We both had our heads back, eyes closed, when all of a sudden Jeep (my husband) started yelling and splashing the water. When I looked up I could see what scared him. A black lab had come up on the porch. When Jeep opened his eyes he was nose to nose with the black lab.

All Jeep saw were his eyes and nose and black fur so he thought it was a black bear! Jeep was trying to figure out the quickest way out of that tub. I laughed for the next three days over that incident. I dubbed the dog Buddy and fed him our leftovers while we were there.

The cabin was cozy, the hot tub felt great and the mountains were beautiful when it snowed. We really enjoyed our holiday vacation. However, Jeep didn’t close his eyes in the hot tub anymore!! He was on “bear watch”...
