Tennessee: Prepare to be amazed

Things To Do, My Tennessee Week

Tennessee’s the kind of state that urges a double-take; you probably already know a lot about the musicians who keep Tennessee front and center , including Nashville-based Grammy winners Kings of Leon and legendary artists such as Dolly Parton and Al Green. Our food is quite legendary, too, such as Neely’s BBQ in Memphis and catfish served-up at the World’s Biggest Fish Fry in Paris. What you don’t know about Tennessee might surprise you. I know I’m surprised almost every day by all of the things there is to do right here in my own backyard.

There’s always an event, attraction or activity going on that keeps things interesting. This seems to be the year for birthdays with the 75th birthday of the King of Rock ‘N Roll, Elvis Presley, that has Graceland celebrating all year long and the 85th anniversary of the Grand Ole Opry which will be commemorated later this year.  We have sites across the state that are quite legendary, including the regal Parthenon in Nashville, Beale Street in Memphis and who can deny the majesty of the Great Smoky Mountains?

I’ve always been inquisitive and it’s only natural that I like to go digging - for antiques, bargains and unique finds. And I can make a day of digging in just about any small town in Tennessee. Franklin is a great “dig” town with antique shops as well as upscale boutiques but then there’s also Hammers Department Store in Winchester, a regional favorite, and don’t miss all the great outlet shopping in Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. And while we’re on the subject of digging, there’s real digging to be done at the Gray Fossil site in Gray, Tenn., the largest archaeological discovery in the Appalachian region.

Amazed yet? For the skeptics out there, it’s time to take to the road and come see for yourselves.  You no longer have to venture out of the country for an unforgettable adventure, the most thrilling and satisfying trip of your life is right here in Tennessee! Once here, you’ll find something for every taste, mood and desire.  Experience the state’s sophisticated side, its down-home feel, its glamorous touch and of course the ever-present Southern hospitality.

This blog will be your source of all things Tennessee: it will reveal to you parts of the state you’ve never seen before and for the locals, it’ll share familiar sites and attractions that remind you of why you love this state so much and call this place home.

The My Tennessee Week posts each Monday will keep you up-to-date with happenings across the state throughout the East, Middle and West regions. The My Tennessee Weekend posts each Thursday will help you plan your weekend filled with fun events and attractions.
