Thank God I’m A Country Boy

Things To Do, Nature and Outdoors, Uncategorized

Every year my family, some from Florida and some from Michigan, meet for a vacation somewhere close to halfway. A few years ago we rented a house in the Smokies. There are over 20 of us of “hillbilly” descent, and that many of us together makes for quite a scene! My aunt put together a Talent Night for us one of the days we were there… my Gramps was always a big John Denver fan, so my husband and I decided to do our own little rendition of Thank God I’m A Country Boy. My husband played guitar, and I (tried) to sing the song. After only the first verse I forgot the words, so my whole family joined in to sing along. I looked over at my Gramps and he had tears in his eyes. I wasn’t sure if they were from laugter, nostalgia or joy, but it touched me nonetheless. My Gramps has since passed, and it was his last vacation with us. The Great Smoky Mountains provided me with a cherished memory that will stay with me always… silly as it may seem. That house in the mountains will always have our laughter and family togetherness as part of it’s history…
