The Fontanel and Other Tennessee Happenings
Things To Do, My Tennessee Weekend
If you haven’t heard of The Fontanel, get acquainted with it by adding it to your list of must-see attractions in Tennessee this weekend. Nestled in the outskirts of Nashville in Whites Creek, Tenn., The Fontanel Mansion is the former home of legendary country artist, Barbara Mandrell. The 27,000 square foot home was custom built in 1988 for the artist and her family and is the largest log home in the entire world. Up-close guided tours reveal the family life of the artist, including peaks inside still-furnished bedrooms, old photographs, some of Mandrel’s costume items, an indoor pool and much more.
And a visit to The Fontanel can be an all-day experience. Not only are there mansion tours, there are acres and acres of land where you can hike through majestic forests, The Woods at Fontanel serves as an outdoor music amphitheater that can entertain more than 2,000 guests at a time, The Farm House Restaurant at Fontanel, which features some of the most delightful home-cooked Southern fare for miles and the soon-to-come Museum at Fontanel that will house exhibits and showcases from many of the country’s most beloved artists.
In addition to visiting The Fontanel, be sure to stop by and catch the Chattanooga Dragon Boat Festival this weekend, July 24. The festival features more than 50 teams racing their Chinese tradition-inspired boats to raise funds for T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital Foundation. In Monterey, be sure to stop by for a listen during the Native American Music Concert on July 24. And if you’re feeling particularly artsy, check out the Broadway play, “Cats” in Memphis through July 25. The award-winning musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber is based on “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” and other poems by t.s. eliot.
