The Hills Are Alive
Things To Do, Nature and Outdoors, Regions
I made my first trip to Tennessee when about 11 years old and I was with a YMCA group. We parked in Cades Cove Campsite with our Trailways Bus and were waiting for supper to be cooked by our Y-leaders when the boy next to me punched me and said he saw a large rock move. As his story spread we just thought he was seeing things until – yes –the hills were alive. Four black bears were starting to move down the hill toward our campsite and we just knew they were after the steak and onions cooking on the open fire. As the news spread, a leader went for help and soon two rangers arrived and with flashlights, and pots and pans clanging scared the bears away. Needless to say, we all slept inside the bus that night with the door shut! Thus started many years of travels to Tennessee and watching for all types of wildlife but never have I had this type of encounter again. The hills are alive and we need to take the time to slow down and enjoy what can be found.
