Waterfall Hunting

One of my most memorable trips to Tennessee was one I made alone starting on Feburary 12, 2005. I was up and on the road before 5 a.m., headed from Russellville, Arkansas to the waterfall country of middle Tennessee to spend a week hiking and enjoying the beauty of this wonderful state. By 12:30 I was in Cookeville where I stopped for gas and a short rest, then decided I would head north and find Waterloo Falls before I called it a day.
Sunday morning I was up early and my first find today was Cummings Falls. After taking a lot of great pictures in what turned out to be an almost week-long rain, I headed out to Burgess Falls State Park, which has three beautiful falls in a short hiking distance.
Then I went to find the falls in Hidden Hollow Park and, after several pictures there, decided it was time to find a motel and dry out my camera gear.
Monday was a day spent in the rain down in the Sparta area, which has a lot of beautiful falls. But the two I found most impressive in the area was Lost Creek Falls. It is a place where the water comes out of the ground in four places, then forms a stream for about a hundred feet or so, then pours off a 60’ bluff in a spectacular falls that disappears into the ground again.
The second is called Twin Falls, where a TVA lake was built. As it filled up, the mountain started leaking, creating a beautiful falls out of the side of the mountain with a good steam of water below.
The rest of the week was spent on down through Fall Creek State Park to Tracey City, hiking the streams and taking pictures of all the beauty I had found.
Friday night found me back in Dickson, Tennessee where I was fortunate enough to meet my favorite ex-wife for the first time. Then Saturday morning after a pancake breakfast at Cracker Barrel, we headed out to hike and photograph Harpeth Narrows State Park, which turned out to be another story all it’s own.
But, like all good things, the week had to come to an end. So, after a wonderful week of hiking, taking pictures and a beautiful friendship that will last a life time, Sunday was spent on the road back to Arkansas with memories that will last a lifetime.
